In babies with pulmonary stenosis, the pulmonary valve of the heart is narrow. The pulmonary valve is one of the main doors of the heart that allows blood to pass from the lungs to the heart.
If the valve is narrow, it forces the right ventricle to pump harder to get the blood through.
This can cause the right side of the heart to become larger.
In most children, the blockage can be fixed during cardiac catheterization by a procedure called balloon valvulopolasty.
A balloon is placed in the pulmonary valve. When the balloon is inflated, the valve is stretched open. Then the balloon is removed.
Some children may need surgery.
